Notes for Aaron Sr

HISTORY OF PLEASANTVILLE SCHOOL
Taken from 1950
Yearbook, Spirit of 76.
From early days,
Pleasantville citizens were school minded. By the way of background, the
earliest school known as the Methodist schoolhouse, was built about three
quarters of a mile east of town.
In 1823, Aaron
Benedict, who was perhaps most interested in the founding of our town, built a
log schoolhouse, east of town, presenting it to the settlers and reserving the right
for its use as a Baptist Meeting House. In 1844, it was moved to the corner of
School and State Streets, which is the present location of the Carlyle Sheldon
residence and was in use until 1847. Austin Merrick, the first teacher, taught
twenty
POST OFFICE, PLEASANTVILLE ,PA.
Pleasantville was
originally called Benedictown, and the post office, Holland, was located in a small room in the Merrick House now
Lee Edward’s. Austin Merrick was the first postmaster.
E.R.Beebe, a nephew to
Aaron Benedict, came to Pleasantville in 1831 and established a tannery
opposite the R.M.Davidsons residence which is now the Sharp Convalescent Home.
It was one of the most important industries of the pioneer town. It was fully
equiped with a bark mill, vats and shoe shop.
Anson Benedict’s house
was a log house built in 1820 where Wiley Ward lived (grandfather of the
reverend Robert Casler, pastor of the Evangelical United Methodist Church). It was owned by Kenneth Stokes for many years and
sold to Louis Alexatos in 1971.
THE PLEASANTVILLE
POTTERY INDUSTRIES
The historical
significance of the Pleasantville Pottery Industry is important as it follows
the earlier settlers as an industry to the opening of the Oil Boom days. Aaron
Benedict, one of the earlier area settlers, having lived here for about two
years wrote his son-in-law, William Porter, telling him of the clay deposits
that were located on land near the southern line of the present borough.
William Porter had been working in a pottery and was classified as a chemist as
he understood the art of glazing.
The first kilns and
turntables were probably located across the street from Aaron Benedict’s home
on Main Street. Mrs. James Bailey Sr., now living at this address
states, When we built the garage we dug up many loads of fired clay test
pieces. We know that this same pottery building was in existence until at least
1851 as it was being used as

The whole area surrounding the State Park of Fort

mounds. There were
others, but seems they were not preserved as Fort
Ancient was by the locals. I will copy what the Author of the Cemetery indexes
has written about this Cemetery. It was
not in very good shape or quite awhile and my understanding is there are
stones missing.

was copied on May 1st, 1984. The Boy Scouts from the nearby camp have made
uncovering stones in this graveyard one of their projects and without their
work we would certainly have missed quite a few. I have since added three names (Margaret Belt, Eliza Ann Hizar & Emma Kirkman) That I picked up from Vital Statistics, Death records.
Thirteen other occupants of this yard whose markers are no longer visible have been included in this copy by one
of a previous listing. Coping done by Chester &

in this cemetery, this is on the boarder

do you suppose they actually lived in Clinton Co. and was buried here. The reason I say this I also checked Chancery records there is nothing on this family there.
I had a problem with a couple of my Warren Co. Families, when I figured out they were on the boarder of three
counties, they did some business in one some in another, they just bounced
back and forth. I found ones will in Clermont Co., lived in Harlen
Township, Warren
County, buried in another.
See what I mean, am I helping any I hope. Check Clinton Co. also plot there too.

Notes for Elizabeth
(Betsey) St. John:
Hi Cousin Betty,
What a nice
surprise! I thought I might never find
out anything more about Betsey St. John Mills. From my elderly
mother's desk drawer, I was surprised to find some vague notes about a Betsey
St. John Mills. According to her notes, Olive Mills, a daughter of Betsey St.
John Mills and John Mills married Ira Hanks, Sr. Ira Hanks, Sr. was my
mother's great grandfather on her mother's side. I merely guessed that
Betsey was married a second time from mom's notes to a Dr. White and apparently they went to
Buffalo. That's all I have!
Yes, I'd certainly
like to have her parents. I don't have a clue! I don't have anything
on their children other than Olive and I
sure don't have anything on
Betsey's line.
Please send me
whatever you are willing to share. In
turn, if I have anything you are
searching for, just let me know.
From Ruth Larson
PS>As you know, my
connection is to Olive Mills Hanks and I have the information on her
children, etc. Now, in light of what
you've given me that Lewis II St. John married a Sarah Nichols from
Erie Co., NY I'm wondering if there is a "double" connection because my
mother's great grandmother on her father's side (Dodge) was Mahalia
Nichols and she came from the same area of NY State.
I have some info on
the Nichols family originally from NY State that I thought was correct
and was the connection to Mahalia Nichols but there is some kind of a mixup and I'm now trying to figure it out.
The mixup is because of the
spelling of the surname. A history of the Nicolls family was previously written my
a decedant and is supposed to be on record with the Crawford County
Historical Society. I've been trying to secure a copy. In the composing of the
Nicolls history, the author referred to
a previously
written history about the
Gleason family and I'm also trying to secure a copy of that history.
I've gone through the Nicolls history and for some reason there is no
mention of my great great grandmother Mahalia Nichols yet, I'm certain of
her birth date, etc, and I even have pictures of her.
The problem is there
were two families with similar surname spellings - Nicolls - Nichols - in
Crawford County and they both came from NY State during the same era
yet they apparently were not related. There also were two other families
with the same surname - Gleason - but it seems they were not related.
I've spoken with
descendants of the Nicolls family and they contend their name was always
spelled Nicolls never Nichols and because my g g grandmother is not
among the children of Simon Nicolls and
Polly Gleason, I have to believe
there were two separate families.
Anyway, it's a real
mixup! If you want me to send you what
I have on the Simon
Nichols(Nicolls) family who came from NY
State to Crawford County, I'll be pleased to
forward it to you.
Maybe you have
something that might be a lead to tie these families together.
Thank again!
Ruth
Betty,
No, I don't live near
Crawford County. I'm back in my home
town of Ridgway, PA in Elk
County but my mother was born in Conneautville in 1905 and for many years we
went back and forth to my grandmother's farm which was located between
Norrisville and Conneautville. We used to go to a lot of family reunions at
Grandmother's but I was too young to pay much attention to family
genealogy. Now that my mother is in a
nursing home I've inherited her
photos and notes and that's what I've been using in my research. Where do you live?

Notes for Aaron St. John:
St. JOHN, Platt - Otsego
This gentleman was born in Norwalk, Conn., March 2, 1786, the
eldest child of Aaron and Mary ST. JOHN. Aaron moved
from
Connecticut in 1807, and settled on the farm in the
town of Otsego
which has since been held in the family. He had one
brother, Martin,
who went to Florida, - the last heard of him. He had
four sisters,
Sarah, Cynthia, Mehetabel, and Maria, all of whom
were married,
raised families, and are deceased. The father died Jan. 26, 1815,
the mother Aug. 31, 1844.
Upon the death of his father Platt
received 100 acres of the homestead farm, and
afterward bought
the remaining 100 acres belonging to the heirs. He
was married,
Dec.
30, 1812, to Rebecca RUSSELL, daughter of Jethro and
Rebecca Russell, who were natives of New Bedford,
Mass. They
had children as follows:
- Mary A., born March 5, 1815, married, Feb. 5, 1845, to Pardon
H. RUSSELL, who was born in Rensselaer Co., N.Y., Sept. 18, 1814.
They had two children who died in infancy. Mr.
Russell died Jan. 30,
1875. Mrs. R. has been living since his death with
her mother, Mrs.
St. John. At her insistence a representation of the
old homestead,
with portraits of her father and mother, appear on
another page of
this work.
- Polly, born April 4, 1817, wife of Chester TAYLOR.
Juliet E., born April 15, 1846, the wife of S. Wilson CHENEY;
Arthur W., born Oct. 28, 1871, and Maude May, born Feb. 21, 1873,
are the children of the latter. Lillie M., born May 8, 1857, wife of
George A. BAILEY.
- Stephen, born June 29, 1821; died March
19, 1844. Juliet, born Sept. 25, 1824, wife of George HINES;
died April
9, 1845.
- Louisa, born Dec. 28, 1826; died Nov. 20, 1868.
Of the latter we quote the following from an obituary
notice by her
pastor, the Rev. H. V TALBOT:
She was a warm and zealous advocate of the doctrine
of
holiness, and her consistent walk, Christian
conversation, devotion
to Christ and his cause, bore unmistakable evidence
that she enjoyed
it. When death came it found her ready. She quietly
folded her hands,
exclaiming, "All is light before me!" and
peacefully fell asleep in
Jesus.
Mr. St. John was as member of the Methodist Episcopal
church
of Fly Creek from its organization. We cannot better
close this
record of his life than by quoting from an obituary
notice furnished
the Northern Christian Advocate by his pastor, the
Rev. David L.
PENDALL:
Brother St. John was one of the oldest members of the
Methodist
Episcopal church of Fly Creek, and one of its firmest
friends. The
last love-feast he enjoyed with us, which was a few
weeks previous
to his death, he gave in a fervent, melting testimony
of the effects of
the love of God in his soul; and we thought, while
listening to it with
delight, that if it was the last testimony we should
ever hear from him,
it would be a blessed legacy to leave to his family,
the church, and
the world. It was the last. Ere he was again
permitted to tell of the
power of Jesus to save, in a public capacity, he was
summoned to
the paradise of God. . . . He lived a Christian, died
a Christian, and
doubtless is a sharer in the Christian's blessed
reward.
The mother is still living, at the advanced age of
eighty-four,
surrounded with the loving attention of her children,
grand and
great-grandchildren.
